North Oaks: A Year in Review

As 2017 comes to a close, the residents and staff at North Oaks are thankful for the many fortunes that were experienced this year. A close-knit community located in Pikesville, Maryland, North Oaks’ residents appreciate the many opportunities they have to pursue holistic health and well-being. This year also brought some exciting changes to the community, as well as the continuation of many beloved programs and activities.

Here’s Looking at You, North Oaks

In April of this year, North Oaks, a long-time sponsor of the Baltimore Jewish Film Festival, was honored to host a showing of The Outrageous Sophie Tucker and serve as a festival site. Traditionally residents would participate in the festival by attending movie screenings at the Gordon Center or other off-site venues, but this year residents and staff welcomed the Baltimore community to North Oaks.

“It was incredible because it gave people an opportunity to come here and experience our community. It was such a successful event that moving forward North Oaks will host a film festival movie annually,” says Cindy Wolf, Marketing Director at North Oaks.

Dining is Delicious No Matter How You Slice It

The Acorn Café made its debut as a buffet-style dining option for residents. Acorn’s menu is entirely different than the Oak Room’s, a formal eatery on the North Oaks campus. Residents of North Oaks now enjoy more dining options than ever. Whether residents and their guests are in the mood for a more casual meal or simply don’t have the time to sit for a formal dinner service, the Acorn Café offers the perfect alternative.

“It’s been a huge hit and the food is really incredible,” says Cindy. “The Café includes entrees, salad, desserts, and wine. Whichever option residents choose, they’re going to enjoy a phenomenal dinner. We are known for our dining at North Oaks, for the quality of our food and meals, which now extends to buffet dining.”

North Oaks’ culinary team, led by Executive Chef Nathan Finney, has participated in Taste of Pikesville for several years, competing toe-to-toe with restaurants in the area. He has always brought home an award, which is a significant honor. Most don’t expect to see a senior living community at a food-tasting event, but Nathan’s commitment to producing excellent food at North Oaks is undeniable and the proof is literally in the pudding!

A Space, Reinvented

Another addition to the North Oaks campus is the Club Room. Formerly the Billiards Room, it now functions as more of a multipurpose space where residents gather for regular card playing, meetings, club get-togethers, movies and more. Since its rebranding, the Club Room has seen much more activity than in the past. Residents are able to reserve the space or simply show up and enjoy it in whatever way they please. Next up for a facelift: the seventh floor lounge. Renovations are in the planning stages.

Memories Made at Annual Event

Family Fun Day is an annual event at North Oaks that for many is the highlight of the year. Residents bring their families for a day of fun and entertainment. Generally 300-400 people attend the June event and play carnival games, pose in the photo booth, smile for the roving photographer, and share a wonderful meal.

“It’s a lot of planning, but it really pays off because it’s all about the residents and their families being able to get together and enjoy good quality time that also happens to be really, really fun,” says Cindy.

New Instructor Reinvigorates Residents

Fitness is not new to North Oaks. But Clint Altman, the new fitness coordinator is. Clint is certified by the National Institute for Fitness and Sports and does a number of exercise classes in the state-of-the-art fitness center. The residents have welcomed Clint with open arms, and active feet.

While residents reminisce about the memorable experiences, connections and friendships of 2017, the team at North Oaks is planning an extraordinary year to come. To learn more about ongoing activities and events at North Oaks, or what lies ahead in 2018, please call (410) 486-9090. Happy New Year!
