Fun Outdoor Summer Activities for Seniors
Summer is traditionally the time to go outdoors and do something fun. And who isn’t ready for that after months of social distancing and staying indoors?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells us outdoor activities are the safest of all, especially if you’ve been vaccinated. So if you need extra motivation to get outdoors, you’re in the right place. We’ve created a list of some of our favorite things to do outdoors in summer. From walking and bird-watching to berry picking and ball games, you’re sure to find something that gets you out the door and back into the joys of summer.
9 Outdoor Activities for Seniors This Summer
1. Exercise your green thumb.
Tending a garden, even if it’s just a few container plants on the patio, can make you happy. The exercise alone will boost your mood. The sun’s rays also increase serotonin levels, a happy neurotransmitter in your brain. If you’re new to gardening, consider joining a gardening club. It’s a great way to make friends and learn how to grow flowers and vegetables that do well in your climate.
2. Take a hike.
Instead of walking around the block, change your routine and head to the park or nature preserve. A change of scenery will prevent boredom and inject variety into your workout. If you’re feeling adventurous, pack a backpack and go somewhere you’ve never been before. Just be sure to tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Or better yet, take a friend along with you.
3. Watch the birdies.
Finding motivation to be more active outdoors is a common problem for many seniors. Bird-watching might be all you need to get out and learn more about these fascinating creatures. There are plenty of birds to study (over 450 species in Maryland) and beautiful sights to see. Plus, learning the names, appearances and calls of local birds is good exercise for your brain.
4. Attend an event.
Summer is the peak season for community events. From outdoor concerts and theater in the park to food festivals and classic car shows, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Check your town’s website or library, or search online to see what’s happening in your area.
5. Head to the pool.
Swimming is both invigorating and relaxing. It offers a low-impact workout that’s easy on the joints, helps relieve stiff muscles, and can be as stress relieving as a soak in the bath. If you haven’t been swimming lately, try walking around in the water. Or join a light water aerobics class in your community pool. You might be surprised how good it feels to be back in the swim again.
6. Pick your own.
Summer is the season to pick your own fruit. In Central Maryland, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches and apples are yours to pick during the growing season. Anything you don’t eat right away can be turned into jams, pies, tarts and crisps … perfect for a summer picnic or backyard barbecue.
7. Go on a picnic.
Why not pack a picnic basket and head to a scenic spot for an alfresco meal? You could invite the whole family, ask everyone to bring a dish, and make your get-together a family affair. The kids can play games or go for a hike while the adults fire up the grill and enjoy some adult beverages. If the sun’s blazing overhead, look for a spot that offers shade and a place to sit, such as a shelter at a local park.
8. Go out to a ball game.
If you’re lucky enough to have a pro baseball team play nearby, head for the stadium. In our area, we have the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. If you have grandkids who play Little League or softball or soccer, show your support and cheer them on to victory. Win or lose, an ice cream cone after the game will ensure their effort doesn’t go unrewarded.
9. Putt-putt for the fun of it.
Putt-putt may be past its heyday, but miniature golf is still a lot of fun. Mini-golf courses come in all types, from monster-themed courses designed for kids to classic courses that mimic their larger cousins with long fairways and water hazards. Some even feature waterfalls and LED-lit night play.
